Onyx, an open-source AI research agent, has secured $10 million in seed funding to revolutionize enterprise search. Khosla Ventures and First Round Capital co-led the round, with additional investments from Y Combinator and notable angels, including Gokul Rajaram (Coinbase, Pinterest), Arash Ferdosi (Dropbox), Amit Agarwal (Datadog), and Kulveer Taggar (Zeus Living).

The company plans to use the funds to enhance its AI research agent, grow its team, and strengthen engineering, developer relations, and go-to-market strategies. This investment highlights the increasing importance of efficient knowledge management in today’s workplaces.

Onyx’s AI-Powered Enterprise Search

Founded in 2023 by Yuhong Sun and Chris Weaver, Onyx is designed to tackle information fragmentation in enterprises. Yuhong, an expert in machine learning and NLP, previously worked on deep learning for natural language-to-SQL translation and semantic search at Alation, Inc. Chris, formerly a technical lead at Robinhood, specialized in fraud detection systems. Together, they bring extensive expertise in AI, backend development, and security to reshape enterprise search.

As businesses rely on platforms like Slack, Confluence, and Google Drive, retrieving critical data becomes increasingly challenging. Onyx addresses this issue by indexing information from over 40 tools, including Salesforce, SharePoint, GitHub, and Gong. Unlike conventional keyword searches, Onyx’s AI agent mimics human search behavior, exploring multiple pathways to deliver precise answers instantly.

Expanding Reach and Future Prospects

Onyx’s innovative approach has drawn major clients like Netflix, Thales Group, and Bitwarden, who use its platform to streamline knowledge management and boost productivity. By focusing on open-source principles, Onyx ensures transparency and customization, allowing organizations to tailor the platform to their needs while contributing to a broader development community.

With fresh funding, Onyx will enhance its platform, integrate more tools, and expand its market reach. “We built Onyx as an open-source solution to fix knowledge fragmentation without compromising data security,” said Yuhong Sun, Co-Founder of Onyx. Investors recognize the platform’s emphasis on privacy, security, and efficiency, reinforcing its role in transforming enterprise search.

As demand for AI-driven enterprise search grows, Onyx will lead the shift by bridging information gaps and optimizing knowledge accessibility for businesses worldwide.
