Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has rolled out image generation capabilities in its API, allowing developers to create images using its “grok-2-image-1212” model.
The API supports up to 10 images per request, with a limit of five requests per second. Each generated image is priced at $0.07 in JPG format. While competitive, this pricing is slightly higher than that of Black Forest Labs—xAI’s previous partner for image generation on X—which charges around $0.05 per image. Meanwhile, rival provider Ideogram’s pricing ranges up to $0.08 per image.
Currently, xAI’s API does not offer customization options for image quality, size, or style. Additionally, the company notes that prompts sent to the API may be revised by a “chat model” before processing.
Since launching its API in October 2024, xAI has been actively expanding its capabilities and seeking new revenue streams. The company is reportedly in discussions for a $10 billion funding round that could push its valuation to $75 billion.
Beyond image generation, xAI has been making strategic moves in the AI space. The company recently acquired a generative AI video startup and is expanding its Memphis-based data center to support the training and deployment of its advanced AI models, including the upcoming Grok 3.
