Seattle-based climate advisory firm Earth Finance has acquired Climate Engine, a Nevada startup known for transforming complex climate data into actionable insights for businesses. While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, the acquisition adds five new employees to Earth Finance’s growing team, pushing its headcount beyond 40.

Founded in 2014 as an academic research tool by scientists at Reno’s Desert Research Institute and the University of California Merced, Climate Engine pivoted to a commercial model in 2020. Since then, it has focused on bridging Earth sciences with financial decision-making, using environmental intelligence to help businesses reduce risk, increase resilience, and align operations with planetary realities.

At the core of its offerings is a platform called SpatiaFi — short for Spatial Finance technology. The tool merges satellite, meteorological, and environmental data with economic indicators, enabling companies to assess asset vulnerability, predict natural disaster exposure, and integrate sustainability into investment decisions. Earth Finance plans to integrate SpatiaFi into its suite of climate intelligence services.

“We’re making this acquisition because of the strength of Climate Engine’s technology and team — and because every industry today must understand how to use environmental data to drive better decisions,” said Reuven Carlyle, co-founder and executive vice president of Earth Finance. Carlyle, a former Washington state senator, co-founded the company in 2023 alongside climate policy expert Garrett Kephart and Bryan Weeks, previously of Russell Investments.

The acquisition expands Earth Finance’s footprint in the fast-growing sustainability consulting space. Backed by a $14 million seed round, the company has been on an acquisition spree — previously bringing in Water Foundry, which helps organizations manage water quality and scarcity, and Molecule, a firm specializing in transportation and renewable fuels.

Climate Engine has also been a longtime partner of Google Cloud and was a founding member of the Google Cloud Sustainability Ready initiative, highlighting its role at the intersection of tech and environmental science.

As the pressure mounts for corporations to adapt to climate-related risks, Earth Finance is positioning itself as a go-to resource for data-driven, sector-specific strategies that support both decarbonization and financial resilience.
