Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has introduced a memory feature for Grok, its chatbot, marking a key step toward matching rivals like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
The new update, announced Wednesday night, enables Grok to remember details from previous conversations. With this capability, Grok can now give more personalized replies, especially for things like recommendations or recurring questions. However, the personalization only kicks in after the bot has gathered enough data from past interactions.
This feature brings Grok closer to its main competitors. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has long supported memory and recently expanded it to recall context across entire chat histories. Google’s Gemini also offers persistent memory to tailor responses based on user interactions.
xAI emphasized transparency in how Grok’s memory works. “Memories are transparent,” the official Grok account posted on X. “You can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.”
The memory function is now available in beta on Grok.com, and through its iOS and Android apps. However, it’s not yet available for users in the EU or U.K. due to data protection regulations.
Users can manage their memory settings via the Data Controls page in the app. They can turn memory off entirely or delete specific memories by selecting the memory icon within the Grok chat interface on the web — with Android support coming soon.
xAI confirmed it’s working on adding this feature to the Grok chatbot embedded in X (formerly Twitter), although no release date has been set.
